ART 257 Intro to Jewelry and Metalsmithing

An introductory course for beginners that covers fundamental jewelry and metalsmithing techniques and the proper use of related tools. This course explores developing and constructing jewelry and objects rooted in material culture, introducing historical and contemporary work through image presentations, lectures and independent research. Repeatable for credit.

Upon Successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Utilize a wide variety of techniques, tools and materials commonly/traditionally used in the field of jewelry and metalsmithing
2. Incorporate historical and contemporary jewelry and metalsmithing forms and discourse into their practice through class presentations, discussions, and independent research
3. Create jewelry and craft objects that communicate ideas, emotions, experiences; to consider objects conceptually as well as formally
4. Present a unique artistic expression through creative thinking and a deliberate approach to the formal/aesthetic qualities in their work through ideation-iteration-evaluation-completion
5. Articulate the formal and conceptual qualities of jewelry and objects of material culture through research, critiques, and discussions
