This course is designed to introduce the techniques of casting. Through casting and mold-making, students will develop the ability to reproduce an object while exploring various implications of the manufactured object, its place within a contemporary art practice and the relationships of the sculptural object to the mass consumer world we live in. We will address issues such as preciousness, value, permanence/impermanence, content, site and materiality. We will learn traditional and contemporary casting techniques such as, wax sculpting, metal and resin casting, and mold making in addition to exploring the integration of new digital media processes.
