XLMT 5978 Introduction to Kinesiology: Upper Body

Introduction to Kinesiology-Upper Body is the first of four required kinesiology courses. The class focuses on introductory level kinesiology concepts and principles, anatomical terminology and anatomy as related to the attachments of muscles and joint movement. This course is a foundation class in the kinesiology series of the massage program and cultivates a respectful, inclusive, and accessible learning environment while supporting creativity, experimentation, and personal transformation.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Know kinesiology foundations concepts, principles and definitions

2. Understand and use intermediate level terminology as related to structural kinesiology

3. Locate and palpate skeletal and soft tissue landmarks of the human body as related to the attachments of muscles

4. Know introductory foundations of kinesiology

5. Understand and use anatomical terminology as related to structural kinesiology

6. Identify anatomical landmarks

7. Know precautions and endangerment sites as related to muscles

8. Explore palpation as a learning tool

9. Identify skeletal bones for the attachment of muscles

10. Identify Origin and Insertion as attachment sites for muscles

11. Recognize types of joints and demonstrate Action (joint movement)
