XLMT 5974 Massage 2

Therapeutic techniques are introduced and worked with, such as joint mobilization, stillness, the use of elbows, knuckles and forearms, body rocking, oppositional stretch, resisted movement, side-lying massage, and the exploration of different energy modalities. Students will learn to tailor their massage approach to the needs of the client. Students also begin to use SOAP charting, and client intake. Correct body dynamics the student developed in Massage 1 is also a focus. There is no required textbook. Massage 2 students have the option to sign up separately and join Practice Lab.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Perform a Swedish massage using proper draping and body mechanics

2. Design and implement a massage session for a variety of clients

3. Proficient in mobilization, including body rocking, joint range of motion, hold/relax, and oppositional stretch techniques

4. Proficient in the use of fists, knuckles, elbows and forearms, using proper body mechanics, and to understand the indications and contraindications of each

5. Provide a massage in side-lying position

6. Demonstrate basic understanding of the client intake process, SOAP charting and treatment plans

7. Build on the student’s understanding of the body/mind and energetic relationship as it relates to the practice of massage

8. Identify and apply sanitary/disinfection protocols

9. Identify and practice regular self-care techniques
