RC 210 Emergency and Critical Care Part 1

This course presents information on techniques used with emergency and critical care patients including in depth discussion of electrocardiography, emergency response, and medical monitoring/management. Prepares students for training in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Programs (NRP).

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will be able to:
1. Interpret normal and abnormal ECG rhythm, rate and conduction disturbances
2. Perform lead placement for 12 lead and cardiac monitor electrocardiography
3. Identify and describe the indications for and the role of the respiratory care practitioner in a rapid response team activation
4. Recommend ventilation, defibrillation, medication and airway management techniques for correction of life threatening scenarios using ACLS, PALS and NRP guidelines
5. Interpret normal and abnormal hemodynamic values typical of common critical cardiopulmonary disorders
6. Recommend therapy using normal and abnormal capnography patterns associated with common critical cardiopulmonary disorders
7. Describe the mechanisms of action, indications/contraindications, and appropriate dosages of drugs used in the management of life threatening cardiopulmonary scenarios
8. Recommend emergency airway management techniques using artificial airway devices
