RC 120 Advanced Cardiopulmonary Diagnostics and Monitoring

This course will discuss the use of diagnostic and monitoring used in the clinical evaluation and management of patients. Cardiopulmonary assessment and related diagnostic procedures are presented for acute and chronic cardiopulmonary disease.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Identify common cardiopulmonary symptoms and relate them to the manifestation of specific respiratory diseases
2. Describe the process of a complete physical patient examination and relate how each component impacts or is affected by the pulmonary system
3. Describe the components and results of a neurological exam and identify how they relate to the care provided by the respiratory care practitioner
4. Discuss the specific significance of various laboratory tests in relation to the respiratory system and pulmonary disorders
5. Classify arterial blood gas results and make recommendations in the management of the patient with respiratory dysfunction
6. Discuss ATS standards for performance of pulmonary function tests, interpret and correlate results with the underlying disease states, and offer recommendations for disease management based on test results
7. Identify the radiological studies utilized within the scope of respiratory care, compare and contrast normal studies from common presentations for a variety of pulmonary disorders
8. Discuss the indications and significance of bronchoscopy; identify the role of the respiratory care practitioner in this procedure
9. Identify normal and abnormal patterns of sleep using polysomnograms
10. Explain nutritional needs and requirements, metabolism, and the respiratory quotient
