NRS 460 Advocacy through Healthcare Policy

This course examines the role of a nurse in influencing health policy and advocating for quality healthcare. Students analyze current healthcare policies and initiatives, identifying how policies influence healthcare access, quality, cost, and nursing practice. This course will engage in advocacy efforts to promote ethical, equitable, and evidence-based policies. The student will develop strategies to inform, advance, and implement policy as an advocate and change agent within healthcare organizations and government entities.

Admission to the BSN program; NRS 400, STAT 243Z, and WR 123 or WR 227Z

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Examine the role of nurses as healthcare leaders and advocates in the development of health policy throughout history
2. Understand the historical, ethical, legal, social, cultural, economic, and political implications of addressing a health issue with a policy strategy
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the interdependence of policy and practice
4. Develop plans for implementing a collaborative policy campaign that addresses health disparities, confronts structural racism in healthcare, and advances cultural humility in the community
5. Analyze the impact of healthcare policy issues on healthcare structure, financing, nursing practice, and patient outcomes
