NRS 410 Interprofessional Collaboration and Leadership

This course is an introduction to the core competencies of Professional Nursing Practice in leadership and teamwork. This course focuses on building interprofessional collaboration, and leadership skills to shape organizational cultures through professional accountability, standards of practice, and quality improvements. The student will develop and apply effective communication skills, conflict resolution strategies, leadership styles, ethical and critical decision-making to promote quality improvement initiatives. The student will learn how to work within a team, explore problem-solving strategies, and exercise inclusivity and empathy in interpersonal relationships that are crucial to support nursing practice and influence patient equity with a system-based approach.

Prerequisite

Admission to the BSN program, NRS 400 and STAT 243Z and WR 123 or WR 227Z

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Compare/contrast the roles and perspectives of the nursing profession with other care professionals on the healthcare team (i.e., scope of discipline, education and licensure requirements)

2. Demonstrate a basic understanding of organizational structure, mission, vision, philosophy, and values

3. Apply leadership concepts, skills, and decision-making in providing high-quality patient care, healthcare team coordination, and oversight and accountability for care delivery in various settings

4. Demonstrate leadership and communication skills to effectively implement patient safety and quality improvement initiatives within the context of the interprofessional team

5. Apply quality improvement concepts, processes, structures, and outcome measures to identify practice gaps, clinical questions, and the development of changing current practices
