NRS 400 Transition to Professional Practice of Nursing

Transitions to Professional Nursing Practice is an evidence-based course that provides an introduction to the philosophical, conceptual, and theoretical base for the development of professional roles and practices for baccalaureate nurses. Students examine the role of the baccalaureate-prepared Registered Nurse as a leader and change agent in diverse practice settings. The foundations of professional practice development will include the overview of leadership, ethics, research, interprofessional communication, standards of practice, and cultural safety in diverse professional nursing roles. Course content includes application of AACN Domains in nursing upon safety and quality improvement initiatives.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Define and apply the roles, responsibilities, behaviors, and expectations of the professional nurse as influenced by professional standards of practice and performance in relation to the BSN Essentials

2. Apply the integration of accountability, autonomy, and ethical decision-making in the delivery of safe, effective, and quality driven nursing practice

3. Analyze elements of communication, collaboration, and leadership, as a member of the interprofessional healthcare team

4. Utilize/implement evidence-based practice, resource management, and emerging technologies to drive innovation, cultural safety, and healthcare dynamics in nursing practice

5. Analyze the role of the nurse as a change agent through leadership and advocacy to influence and develop healthcare policies, initiatives and strategies to promote quality care outcomes

6. Develop a career portfolio to examine and reflect on current nursing practice, learning opportunities and areas of growth that embrace lifelong learning in nursing practice
