ED 234 Reading Instructional Strategies

Grounded in theoretical frameworks and practical applications, this course supports educators to craft effective and evidence-based reading strategies for students. Upon completion educators will understand how to create inclusive literacy experiences. Topics include the foundations of literacy, historical and contemporary theoretical perspectives of reading acquisition, phonemic awareness and phonics instruction, and equity in instruction and assessment.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Explain the theoretical foundations of literacy development
2. Differentiate historical perspectives and contemporary approaches to teach reading
3. Use evidence-based reading strategies such as the science of reading, phonemic awareness and phonics instruction to design inclusive literacy strategies
4. Apply research based assessments to support culturally and linguistically diverse students
5. Identify how research based literacy instruction supports development through an equity lens
