XSKM 0500E Skills Dev: Beginning Algebra

Beginning Algebra introduces algebraic concepts and processes with a focus on multi-step linear equations, linear inequalities, and graphing linear equations. It emphasizes number-sense, applications, formulas, and proper mathematical notation. Throughout the course, students will develop problem solving strategies; practice metacognitive skills and error analysis; and practice student habits that enhance success in math. Students who successfully complete Beginning Algebra will be prepared to achieve a passing score on the GED Mathematics test and will be eligible for placement into Math 065 (or similar courses).

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable
2. Identify and interpret the slope as a rate of change in linear relationships
3. Recognize the relationship between the slopes of two lines that are parallel or perpendicular
4. Represent linear relationships between two variables in multiple forms: using a graph, table, verbal description, and algebraic formula
5. Create linear equations, using slope- intercept and point-slope forms, that model contextual situations and use the model to make predictions
6. Solve linear systems in two variables graphically
7. Evaluate functions and use functions to model the relationship between two quantities with tables and graphs
8. Solve real world problems including surface area and volume of regular and compound polygons using appropriate formulas including the Pythagorean Theorem
9. Communicate mathematical thinking, analyze and correct errors in their work, and self-evaluate problem solving strategies
