SOC 204H Introduction to Sociology-Honors

Introduction to fundamental concepts in sociology, such as culture, social structure, organizations, socialization, deviance, and stratification, as well as theoretical traditions and research methodology. Development and application of the sociological imagination. This honors class delves deeper into course topics and requires a high level of student motivation; the pace may be faster than non-honors courses. See lanecc.edu/honors for information. Students cannot receive credit for both SOC 204 and SOC 204H.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Articulate the distinct nature of a sociological perspective or approach for understanding social phenomena
2. Outline the role of theory and evidence in building sociological knowledge
3. Illustrate how fundamental concepts in sociology (culture, social structure, stratification, socialization, institutions, deviance, social control) relate to everyday life
4. Apply sociological concepts, theory and research to analyze contemporary social issues
5. Use sociological knowledge and skills to discuss the relationship between social institutions and individual agency
