NRS 110A Foundations of Health Assessment and Health Promotion

This course introduces the learner on health promotion across the life span includes learning about self-health as well as client health practices. To support self and client health practices, students learn to access research evidence about healthy lifestyle patterns and risk factors for disease/illness, apply growth and development theory, interview clients in a culturally-sensitive manner, work as members of a multidisciplinary team giving and receiving feedback about performance, and use reflective thinking about their practice as nursing students. The family experiencing a normal pregnancy is a major exemplar.

Prerequisite

BI 233, BI 234, FN 225, PSY 215, WR 121Z, WR 122Z AND MTH 095 or higher, all C or better, and admission into the Nursing Program

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify how each step of the nursing process is used in the planning of holistic care

2. Identify health promotion strategies that are person-centered, family centered, developmentally appropriate, and culturally aware to support a client’s health behavior change

3. Implement safe practice of fundamental nursing skills that are consistent with nursing standards of practice and professional performance

4. Recall communication strategies that establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with the client, support systems, and interdisciplinary teams

5. Apply selected nursing, ethical, and legal standards of practice to theory and clinical activities

6. Adhere to institutional policies and procedures regarding the timely completion of assignments
