HS 224 Group Counseling Skills

Introduction to describing, selecting, and appropriately using strategies from accepted and culturally appropriate models for group counseling with clients with a variety of disorders including substance abuse. This class is accepted by MHACBO to meet certification requirements for alcohol and drug counselors.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Explain the benefits and drawbacks of group interventions, types of groups, the criteria for candidate selection for groups, group ethics, and identify the criteria for exclusion from group intervention

2. Develop group facilitation skills including techniques for creating a productive atmosphere including giving and implementing feedback

3. Explain the stages of group development and interventions for facilitators

4. Engage in in-person groups to increase self -awareness, and practice facilitation. Provide and receive feedback in a group setting
