HDFS 227 Children Under Stress

This course examines the social, economic, and cultural factors that contribute to a child's experience and their impact on developmental potential. In this course, we look at some of the major issues that keep children from experiencing life more fully. Emphasis will be placed on attachment theory, the development of self-esteem, and trauma-informed care.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Explain the characteristics of stressed or traumatized children and effects this has on their development, relationships, and learning

2.Distinguish the personal, familial, social, political, economic, environmental conditions or circumstances that impact stress and resilience in young children

3. Identify elements of developmentally appropriate practices and learning environments that meet basic human needs, build skills, and reduce behaviors related to stress or trauma

4. Practice coping strategies that early childhood educators can use to deal with personal and professional stress

5. Locate resources in the community that support children and families in stressful situations
