APR 118 Carpentry Framing and Finishing

Designed for Oregon state-recognized apprentices employed in the carpentry trade. The curriculum is competency-based and modular in format. This course introduces students to framing with steel studs, commercial door installation, and explains how to install and finish drywall.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Identify the components of a steel framing system
2. Demonstrate the ability to build back-to-back, box, and L-headers
3. Identify the different types of drywall and their uses
4. Perform single-layer and multi-layer drywall installations using different types of fastening systems, including nails, drywall screws & adhesives
5. Explain how soundproofing is achieved in drywall installations
6. Explain the differences between the six levels of finish established by industry standards and distinguish a finish level by observation
7. Properly finish drywall using hand tools
8. Repair damaged drywall
9. Identify various types of doorjambs and frames and demonstrate the installation procedures for placing selected doorjambs and frames in different types of interior partitions
10. List and identify specific items included on a typical door schedule
11. Demonstrate the procedure for placing and hanging a selected door
