HDFS 226 Child Development

This course is an introduction to the foundations of development from conception through adolescence. Students will explore the interdependence among the physical, cognitive, and socioemotional domains of development, and will examine theories and research methods used to understand and study the development of children. Current issues in the field and their impact on the developing child will be highlighted, including biological and environmental influences.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Explain the basic theories and concepts of developmental psychology and child development related to physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development

2. Describe prenatal development and the developmental trajectories of children from birth to adolescence, including signs of typical and atypical development

3. Apply concepts related to the six developmental domains to direct observation of children

4. Identify biological and environmental factors that influence development from conception to adolescence

5. Discuss how research findings relate to theory, practical applications, and current issues in development
