BT 167 Computerized Accounting and Payroll

Introduces students to the use of computerized accounting software for small business including an introduction to payroll operations. Attention is given to the application of the entire accounting cycle for both service providers and merchandisers with an emphasis on planning and analysis. Introduces federal and state regulations affecting payroll. Provides practice in all payroll operations, including accounting entries and the preparation of payroll tax returns that are required of business.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Perform the steps of the accounting cycle for both service and merchandising companies using computerized accounting software 
2. Utilize computerized accounting software to maintain a chart of accounts, customer and vendor lists, item lists, payroll items, financial statements and other exported reports
3. Analyze and record business and payroll transactions via business forms, the general journal, and registers, to meet an organizations’ reporting, tax, and payroll compliance responsibilities
4. Maintain payroll records necessary for accounting information and for legal compliance
5. Perform calculations related to payroll and benefits 
6. Set up and process payroll, including the generating of payroll reports using computerized accounting software
