HIM 225 Legal & Ethical Aspects of Health Information Management

This course introduces legislation affecting healthcare, along with a review of issues such as professional liability, informed consent, privacy and security laws, electronic health records, release of protected health information, patients’ rights and workplace legalities. Additionally, the cost of health care, who pays for it, and types of health insurance are discussed. A variety of ethical issues in health care are explored in health information management.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe health care law and how it affects licensing, regulation, and accreditation
2. Analyze tort law/theories of negligence and tort reform
3. Describe criminal aspects of health care law
4. Examine contract and antitrust issues – including managed health care
5. Analyze corporate liability and liability of health care professionals as it relates to ethics and malpractice
6. Identify patient rights and responsibilities /patient safety and zero harm (JCAHO)
7. Evaluate policy relating to employment law and labor relations in the healthcare industry
8. Apply federal and state reporting requirements related to privacy and security, i.e., disclosure accounting, release of information, breach notification, Office of Civil Rights
