HIM 107 Integrated Electronic Health Records

Students will learn to work with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems with simulated data. Students will apply practice management systems (PMS) used in a medical office and work with protected health information (PHI). Students will learn the functionality of health care software: threats to security, the need for standards, high levels of usability, sources of errors and compliance with regulatory standards.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Identify common components of an EHR-PM system used in acute care, community health, public health, and small clinics; and types of EHR applications (e.g., ADT, Lab, Billing/Coding)
2. Describe data flows across health information systems and the implication of regulatory standards
3. Identify root causes of EHR-PM data entry induced error (e.g., usability, workflow interference, system errors) and suggest solutions
4. Assess the strengths and weaknesses of specific solutions to health information system problems
5. Explain the reality of solutions and the unintended consequences of changes in an EHR-PM system
