APR 201 Carpentry Basic Rigging and Practices

Designed for Oregon state-recognized apprentices employed in the carpentry trade. The curriculum is competency-based and modular in format. This course introduces students to the basic equipment and hardware used in rigging. An overview of personnel lifting, lift planning and crane load charts will also be introduced along with handling and placing of concrete and the preparing of the student for working in and around excavations.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Select, inspect, use, and maintain special rigging equipment including block and tackle, chain hoists, come-alongs, jacks, and tuggers
2. Tie knots used in rigging
3. Interpret a load chart
4. Use and interpret hand signals
5. Identify requirements for an engineered lift
6. Identify special types of concrete and describe their uses
7. Calculate concrete volume requirements for rectangular, cylindrical, or other geometric structures using formulas, concrete tables, and /or concrete calculators, as applicable
8. Identify concrete testing methods
9. Identify ways to increase soil density
10. Explain the purpose of soil density (compactions)
11. Explain the safety considerations for trenches and deep excavations
