XSKD 0517J Jumpstart GED - Multilevel

Jumpstart students will prepare for GED completion, explore supportive resources and opportunities, become more familiar with technology to complete the GED, and enter a career and or college. Students will also build strategies for critical thinking and student success principles for optimal learning. The Jumpstart course is a cohort model that will encourage group participation and teamwork while completing individual goals. Students will learn about various resources and will have the opportunity to meet with college employees who are dedicated to supporting students as they work toward their goals.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Students will improve math preparedness for GED and ABSE content courses by practicing fundamental topics including estimation, order of operations, basic statistical calculations, and problem-solving strategies
2. Students will explore the Reading Apprenticeship model and apply strategies to read for understanding
3. Students will gain knowledge of strategies and resources that will better prepare them for persistence and success in ABSE and credit programming
4. Students will increase computer literacy skills
5. Students will practice using metacognitive strategies to improve learning
6. Students will increase their sense of belonging through meaningful interactions with peers, instructors and other college staff
7. Students will develop increased awareness of college and career options through guest presentations and exploration of campus resources
8. Students will develop a greater understanding of their college pathway and steps needed to accomplish their individual goals
