XCOM 5973 Introduction to Communication, Ethics, & Law

Introduction to Communication, Ethics & Law explores the interrelated dynamics—a triad—between communication, ethics and law unique to the massage therapy industry. This triad lays the foundations that shape and define the massage therapist’s relationship to self, client and community, will be used by the massage student in the classroom and professional settings alike and is essential knowledge to be a licensed practitioner in the state of Oregon.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Understand the concepts of communication, law, and ethics in the massage professions

2. Understand the statutes as written which governs massage in the State of Oregon

3. Navigate ethics related to bodywork in the massage therapy industry and the unique ethical dilemmas that may arise in the client and practitioner relationship; the understanding of ethics associated with the statutes, rules, and policies governing the profession

4. Interpret the statutes (laws) and rules of the OBMT in preparation for the jurisprudence exam, a licensing requirement of the OBMT. In this, students will gain a navigational knowledge base of the statutes, rules and policies applicable to the LMT in the state of Oregon

5. Explore responsibility, therapeutic relationship, and critical reflection, defined for the Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) by the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists (OBMT), through developing an understanding of the complexities of verbal and non-verbal communication, core values related to the profession, safety and boundaries, and selfcare; applying this understanding to ourselves, with our classmates and teachers, and ultimately with our massage clients
