XAS 5406 Veterinary Asst Training

A lecture and lab course preparing successful completers for entry level positions in most veterinary facilities. Topics include anatomy and physiology, sanitation and sterilization, restraint and behavior, nursing and observing, grooming, laboratory techniques, radiology and reproduction, drugs, emergencies and first aid, client services, phone techniques and recording.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Understand industry specific terms and acronyms
2. Have an awareness of common disease and parasites found in animals including identification, initial treatment, care, handling and transmission reduction
3. Demonstrate proper handling, carrying, and transportation of animals in various states of health
4. Perform proper cleaning and hygiene procedures. Understand and nutritional and hydration needs and proper modifications based on condition and health concerns
5. Asses and render basic first aid to animals in emergency situations. Understand standard paperwork associated with veterinary care including tracking, scheduling, record keeping and providing care instructions
