MUS 212 Music Theory 2 (Second Term)

Course focuses on chromatic elaboration and enharmonic modulation using fully diminished seventh chords, augmented 6ths and Mm 7ths. Emphasis is on form and analysis including binary, ternary, rondo, variations, art song, sonata form and Fugue. Designed to be taken with MUS 215 and MUS 225 concurrently.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Analyze formal, thematic and harmonic structure, as well as motivic development of the composition in various musical forms such as contrapuntal, binary, ternary and sonata forms
2. Identify all four types of Augmented six chords, their origins, functions and resolution
3. Identify an enharmonic modulation through respelling Mm7 into augmented sixth chord
4. Harmonize a simple modulatory melody
5. Realize various chromatic chords with correct voice leading from a given figured-bass at an advanced level
