GEOG 142 Introduction to Human Geography

This course is an introduction to the field of human geography. Students will explore the relationships and processes that shape cultures. The course focuses on various sub-themes of human geography such as: demographics, world religions, economics, food, migration, ethnic identity, political systems, and globalization. Students will analyze maps and charts as they pertain to the field of human geography.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Analyze social phenomena to understand human behavior and illustrate concepts such as culture regions, cultural diffusion, and the influence of nature on people

2. Illustrate the diversity of cultures across the world during discussions and project-focused research applied to languages, religions, ethnicities, politics, economics, food systems, and urban development patterns

3. Illustrate the importance of “place” to the cultural identity of individuals and larger populations

4. Differentiate between empirical and theoretical methods of inquiry when evaluating concepts and phenomena.

5. Utilize information literacy skills in written and oral communication

6. Apply knowledge and skills to contemporary social problems to better appreciate cultures outside of our own
