ES 102 Contemporary Racial and Ethnic Issues

This course explores the nature and complexity of racial and ethnic diversity in U.S. society. Using current developments in ethnic studies scholarship, we will examine multiple sources of discrimination, and how discrimination impacts self and society. We will also review the contemporary and experiences and issues facing various ethnic and racial groups. The course concludes with strategies for overcoming exclusion.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Analyze historical and contemporary scholarship on racial and ethnic inequality
2. Recognize how aspects of intersectionality impacts oppression in society
3. Examine individual and institutional power dynamics related to inequality
4. Evaluate existing internal biases and articulate how a variety of worldviews fit within a societal context
5. Work with diverse groups to complete shared tasks
6. Summarize issues, ethical implications, and methods surrounding activism, collaborative
engagement, and community-based action
