WR 115W Writing for Work

This course introduces students to the expectations of workplace communication, including: reading, writing, research, collaboration, and project management. Students will be introduced to concepts of audience, purpose, and genre, and will engage in collaborative writing processes to produce projects. Projects may include job letters, instructions, technical reports, and/or other documents relevant to students' field of study. This course fulfills writing requirements for some Lane programs. Note: This three-credit writing course will count as a prerequisite for WR 121Z at Lane Community College only. Students who plan to transfer should be aware that other colleges and universities in Oregon may not accept WR 115W as a prerequisite for WR 121Z.

Prerequisite

Appropriate Lane Writing Placement or Pass or letter grade of C- or better in WR 097 or successful completion of ABSE Reading and Writing for College Success AND Bridge to College.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Recognize and describe different workplace cultures and codes of ethics

2. Create documents that meet the needs of different audiences, contexts, and workplace cultures

3. Make writing and design decisions appropriate to the genre, situation, audience, and context

4. Develop strategies for solving problems and meeting workplace needs by applying appropriate research, reading, and writing skills and tools

5. Collaborate with classmates, instructor, and class visitors to provide productive feedback

6. Reflect on and apply previous knowledge and experience to meet personal, professional, and workplace communication needs
